Sounds Stuck In My Brain: February 6, 2024 Edition

In A Gadda Da Vida – Iron Butterfly (Original 1968 full version)

(YouTube)

I do love some old psych music. Some of it is too trippy for my liking, which tells me that I have to be on something in order to fully enjoy it. But tracks like these are enjoyable on their own. Now, I can’t describe music. I can only describe how it makes me feel and what sensations that a deep, primitive part of me incapable of human speech gets from it. So I have a vague idea of what a hook is, and I’m sure that the opening lyrics here aren’t a hook, but they kind of are for me. Here they are, transcribed as I hear them:

In a gadda da vida, hoh-neyhh
Don’t you know that hhhI’m lovin’ you-hoooo
In a gadda da vida, bay-behhh

Don’t you know that hhhI’ll hhhalways be true-hoooo

Yeah, yeah, “Simpsons did it,” shut up.

Rattle – Splendora

You’re Standing On My Neck gets all the glory, but Splendora’s other songs deserve recognition. I’ve been listening to the entirety of In the Grass on repeat in my car. It’s a great complement for coffee and there are some great lyrics to get stuck in the brain folds so they can pop up at inopportune times, like when a close friend spilling their guts out to you.

And now I feel like a museum
Just look around and you can see them
And if your heart is old and rusty
And all the halls are dark and dusty
Rattle around with me
Rattle around with me

Two on the Vine – Ep. 1: Nintendo Direct (January 18, 2015)

(YouTube)

Part of the Vinesauce: The Questening project involves finding Vinesauce-related material that I’ve found over the years. This includes the Two on the Vine podcast that Vinny did with KY. I can’t remember if I found it right as they started it, or if it was later on during its tragically short lifespan. Unfortunately, like many fun projects, both hosts shifted their focuses and the podcast hasn’t had a new episode since 2018. And I do remember being excited about “the first episode of 2018”, and utterly disappointed that no new ones followed. So there’s something to note for the Questening.

Highlights for me include:

  • Intro audio by Brad Neely, creator of Creased Comics. I loved his Wizard People, Dear Reader dub for the first Harry Potter movie.
  • Vinny briefly explains the nature of vine sauce and what it does to devices.
  • Vinny dropped his phone and the resulting horror movie and crank call ideas.
  • KY watched the Australian horror movie The Babadook and loved it.
  • Vinny’s idea to get the upper hand in Smash Bros. and still getting his butt handed to him by Mike.
  • Vinny surprises KY with jaw harp. KY asks if Vinny likes it when podcasts have sound effects to enhance the experience. Vinny says no.
  • Vinny mostly listens to The Joe Rogan Podcast. *nervously clears throat in 2024*
    • (Before you armchair warriors crack your knuckles and prepare for the imaginary keyboard battle playing out in your heads, look at the date of the podcast above. If, for some reason, you can’t expend the effort to scroll up, I’ll list it here for you again: 2015. That’s nine years ago, honey. You can stop being scandalized now.)
  • KY likes The SModcast by Kevin Smith.
  • Pokémon Shuffle: “As far as I can tell, the only dancing you’re gonna be doing here is with the music, the sweet-ass catchy tunes, while Pikachu is looking at you with this intense look of love in his eyes. Can a man truly love a poké—anyway.”
  • Vinny likes Tingle.
  • The very first Greenlight Guess!
  • Spelling 2D as “twod”. Vinny likes it so much that he’s calling 2D “twod” from now on.
  • Vinny had a great time recording his first podcast and he’d like to do more.

Please note again that as the podcast is no longer being produced, Greenlight Guess is also no longer a thing. I wouldn’t advise reaching out to KY or Vinny on Twitter/X and bugging them with made-up game titles. Just enjoy this time capsule.
