Wikipedia Trawling: Today’s Special

Like a frenetic gardener spraying dirt around with a rusty spade, my brain likes to dig up random memories. Some of these memories are like corpulent, gooey larvae that have been mashed up by the spade, others are like roly-polies that just want to roll off to do their own thing.

I got a roly-poly the other day in the form of Today’s Special. Back in the days when Nickelodeon depended on Canadian shows for their lineup, little Ellie fell in love with the magical world of the major department store where the show took place. Older Ellie would come to be disillusioned by the soul-destroying black magic of actual retail work, but that’s neither here nor there.

The Wikipedia article has all you need to become acquainted with this wonderful piece of 1980s nostalgia, but I have a fondness for this entry on Muffy Mouse:Muffy Mouse (puppet, Nina Keogh): A mouse who speaks in rhyme and lives in the store all the time. She plays the piano, rides a scooter, and wears a feather boa around her neck like a lasso. She also plays tricks on people, and enjoys mischievous acts. As a mouse, she is obsessed with cheese and other snacks. She's young, naive and her fear of cats makes mention of them a pet peeve. She is usually the first one to get upset or frustrated over a situation, and her cousin, Mort, visits her on occasion.

Bless the person who took the time to characterize this passage.
