20 Streams Later (Eventually)

Lately I’ve been doing an audit of my websites—well, more like glancing over them and thinking random things such as:

“I need to revamp this layout.”

“I should add a Twitch alert.”

“When did I buy this domain, and for what purpose?”

Yes, you read the Twitch comment correctly. I’ve started streaming, and in a related vein, editing videos. I was never much of a video editor, but when I briefly picked it up as a hobby 15 or so years ago, I enjoyed it. I’m seeing a lot of promise for it, especially in the library field.

A YouTuber I discovered is Diane Moore, who’s encouraging Gen X’ers and older folks to start their own YouTube channels. Her advice is more about YouTube, but I think it applies just as well to VODs, which I’m still trying to decide when to upload.

One piece of advice of hers I remember is that the first 20 videos aren’t worth getting excited over because you’re still finding your voice and getting used to being on camera.

Which is why I haven’t announced any streams on this blog. I haven’t reached 20 streams (in fact, I can’t remember how many times I’ve streamed so far). I’m not using a face cam, either. But I’m now understanding how I want to spend this time, and I’m more comfortable with speaking while live.

Besides, in a few years, not using a face cam will be innovative and going against the grain in a world where privacy is lacking. Just watch. Folks will think I was ahead of the curve.

So if you’d like to hang out and watch me wrestle with the occasional OBS hissy fit, here you go.

Right now, it’s art (the most chill of content) and the occasional golf game, streamed on Saturday and Sunday mornings EST. Doing art live has given a current video project some accountability, and I’m actually motivated to complete it.

I would stream the actual video editing process live except:

  1. I’m pretty quiet while editing.
  2. I’m using DaVinci Resolve, which already eats resources. Adding OBS on top of that is just asking my machine to incinerate itself.

I like this direction, though I’m not sure yet what it means for blogging. Maybe I’ll stick to occasional updates instead of the micro “works in progress” posts I thought I’d be doing. Perhaps monthly or quarterly digests will make more sense.

So whether it’s art, golf, or me versus OBS, thanks for being part of the experiment.
